Choir Announcement

Dear choir families,

With our concert being in a week, I wanted to provide some reminders and additional info:

Students should arrive at the high school auditorium at 5:50 PM so that we will have time to run through and rehearse the songs. The concert will then start at 7:00 PM. Students can wear their choir shirt with nice pants/skirt; or a solid dark shirt with nice pants/skirt. If you know that your child will not be attending the concert, please let me know by responding to this email.

Following the concert, we will not have rehearsal Tuesday morning May 3 or Friday morning May 6. However, we will have one final meeting on these days:

  • West final choir meeting Tuesday, May 10 at 7:50 AM
  • South Prairie final choir meeting Friday, May 13 at 7:50 AM

During these final meet times, we will share our thoughts on the concert and then sing some songs just for fun as a celebration of our final meeting.

Thank you so much for all the support you have provided to the Sycamore music program. I look forward to seeing you at the concert!

Music Sharing Day — 2nd-5th Grade

On Music Sharing Day, students can perform music that they have learned outside of music class--either at private lessons, a club, at home, etc. This is a perfect time for orchestra and band students to show what they have learned so far. Sharing Day will take place during your child’s normal music class time the week of May 17. If your child has a song that they would like to perform and is ready to perform, please fill out the Google Form below or send me an email at icrawl@syc427.org.

Students who would like to play a piece on the piano will be able to use the piano in the music room. Students wishing to play another instrument either need to bring their instrument to school that day or send me a home video that shows your student playing the instrument. If your child is singing a song, the lyrics need to be appropriate for school. Students who do not wish to share on Sharing Day will practice their good audience skills of respectfully watching and listening to their classmates and applauding after each performance.

If you have any questions, the best way to reach me is through email. Sign your student up for Sharing Day using this link

Below is the schedule for which days your student can participate.

Top Five Tips for Encouraging Math Learning at Home

  1. Notice math everywhere. Support your student in finding opportunities to notice and use math outside of the classroom everyday. (e.g., playing games, cooking and baking, estimating how much your groceries will cost when you get to the checkout...etc.)
  2. Be positive. Everyone can learn mathematics with perseverance. Avoid ever saying things like, “I was never good at math, so it’s ok if you aren’t good at math either.” There is no such thing as a math gene. The idea that only a select few are skillful at math is both a myth and an excuse. Doing math just takes perseverance and a positive attitude, but everyone can enjoy success with mathematics. Model that perseverance and success at home.
  3. Avoid taking over. If your child is working on math homework, encourage your child to share their thinking and promote the idea that there are many ways to arrive at the solution to a problem. You want the math thinking to come from your child. As you support your child, work to avoid being too quick to take over. Your student may not understand your thinking. Keep the pencil in your child’s hand.
  4. Ask questions that encourage understanding. One good strategy is to ask, “Tell me what the problem is, and can you help me understand how you are solving it?” These types of questions can buy a bit of time for you to get your thoughts together as a parent, and also place yourself and your child on a level playing field.
  5. Set high expectations. Children need to learn to persevere, and to adjust thinking and strategies if their first attempt at a solution is unsuccessful. Encourage your child to keep on trying. If your child gets frustrated, take a break and come back to it. You want to support GRIT and a Growth Mindset. Always look for opportunities to highlight the ways you as an adult never give up and how it’s ok to make mistakes. In fact, mistakes are a great way to better understand the misconceptions in your child’s understanding.
