To Our West Wildcat Fifth Graders

I just wanted to take a quick minute to thank all of our fifth graders and all that they have done these past six years. Even though I have only been with them the past three years, it has been rewarding to be a part of such a great group. Even though we are all very sad to see you leave West, we know that you are going to do great things at the Middle School. We are very proud of you and know you will continue to lead in positive ways like you have here at West. Just remember once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat. Best of luck in sixth grade and wish all of you the very best!

Sycamore Public Library Summer Reading Program

The Sycamore Library will be offering "Read Beyond the Beaten Path," a summer reading program for children of all ages (birth to 12th grade), as well as adults. Reading over the summer is important so that students don't experience a loss with their reading skills, and this program can help! Watch the video and visit their website for more information.

My Middle School Program for Incoming Sixth Graders

Sycamore Middle School will host two “My Middle School” sessions this summer to help students transition from elementary school to middle school. During the program, students will:

  • Meet a few new classmates before the school year begins;
  • Learn to navigate the building and use combination locks;
  • Hear from guest speakers for an inside perspective about what SMS has to offer;
  • And more!

Session dates and registration details can be found by visiting the My Middle School webpage. Registration is required in advance of this program.

Spartan Food Pantry Open Wednesday, May 25!

The Spartan Food Pantry is excited to welcome guests to shop every other week on Wednesdays. On Wednesday, May 25, patrons can collect food at the District Warehouse on 520 N. Maple Street, Sycamore. Pantry patrons are in-person shopping!  Please bring a mask. The pantry hours are 4:30-6:00 PM. The Pantry is open to any family that has a student attending a Sycamore School.

The pantry offers frozen foods, fresh produce, cereal, canned goods, snacks, treats, and much more. Sycamore School District families can come to the pantry every time it is open. Park in the lot next to the warehouse, come on in the front door, and a volunteer will guide you from there.

Community members can now volunteer at the pantry! If you or your organization want to help out, please email for more information.

Mr. Schrader's Final Thoughts on the School Year

At the end of every year it is always such a sad but exciting time. Sad to see our 5th graders move onto middle school, sad to see students move away, and even sad not seeing all of our kiddos walking the hallways or in their classes. It is also very exciting and rewarding at the same time. Excited for what’s next? Excited to see our students grow over the year, as well as rewarding to see all of the things our staff and students accomplished over the year. We had many ups and downs throughout the school year, but I couldn't be more proud of all of our staff and students.

This was a great year and I can’t believe it is over. It felt like a normal year again with field trips, book fairs, West Fest, and so much more. I am very thankful for our WSO and everyone that always stepped up and helped make all of our events such a success. When I became principal here three years ago and was told West is Best, I really wasn’t sure what that meant. It didn’t take long before I realized what a special place West is and the wonderful staff, amazing students, and great parents it has.

It is definitely bittersweet thinking this is my last weekly blast being sent out to parents, but I want all of you to know that I have absolutely loved my time being a West Wildcat and getting to know all of your children. I want to thank you for always making me feel so welcomed, appreciated, and respected these past three years. I am extremely proud of everything we have accomplished and can’t wait to hear about the continued success here at West Elementary.

I wish all of you the best of luck and please know that West Elementary will always hold a special place in my heart.

Thank you,

Ryan Schrader
